Cons: TrustedHousesitters Review
What people don’t like about the website is that not all of the house sitters that they approve have undergone a police background check to see if they have any past criminal records.
This is quite an important feature especially if you are entrusting your pets and your home to a person that you have not met before.
There have been several customers who have complained about this to the company and wishes them to make sure that all of their sitters undergo the police check process before being accepted into their service team.

Elizabeth–the same thing just happened to me. The sitter used my car for a long day trip (193 miles) and will not tell me about it. She assumed I authorized full use of the car when I in fact only authorized one 8 mile airport trip and grocery shopping afterward. She is ghosting me on communication which makes her very untrustworthy. Did you write this person a negative review?
I paid my membership and needed to find a sitter well within the 14 day period of refund in order to get off work for my trip. After contacting multiple sitters in my area with NO responses, I let them know I did not find a sitter in time for my employment to approve the time off. After contacting their customer service, they said I can’t get a refund because I’ve already utilized their services. HOW am I utilizing their services when I haven’t spoken to any of the sitters or USED ANY OF THEIR SERVICES within the 14 days?! This site is a joke.
We signed up because of the rating system and sitter verifications. We are 3 months out from our sitting dates and can’t seem to find anyone to sit for us. Our situation: 3 healthy dogs, beautiful country home in a crime free golf course community in the suburbs of a large city in VA, USA. We are going away for 2 weeks. Our only limitation is that the sitters do not have children because our dogs have never lived with kids and can get nervous around them. Before I tried contacting a sitter, I verified that they were available on the dates we needed, were not traveling with children, and that they had a history of sitting on the East Coast. (A lot of the sitters say that they will sit in the USA but them you look at their history, they only sit in the UK, Europe, or Asia.) They also needed to have been verified by the website, which is why I thought that the price was worth the cost. In a full week since paying our $119, we have been turned down by 15 sitters, 3 have simply ignored our offers, and the 2 sitters that proactively contacted us had children (ignoring that our ad said “no children.”) The site says to sit back, relax, and the offers will start coming in. My experience: 2 offers in a week with both sitters ignoring the one restriction we had, with 18 verified sitters with a history of sitting near our home turning us down or simply ignoring our offer. $119 down the drain. I put up an ad on a competitor’s website that does not charge the home owner and had an offer to sit in less than 12 hours. Unless you live in the UK or in a major tourist destination in the US, Canada, or Europe, you will find it difficult to find a sitter with this website. PS I did contact their customer service 5 days in and was told that they “would keep an eye on my listing.” I don’t know what that means.
The company is legit but there promise of an insurance backed guarantee for damages caused by sitters is not. I have filed a claim more than 6 months ago and all I get is a song and dance about them never had claims before. I am looking at $3000 of damage to my home at this stage from a sitter who refuses to help pay for the costs even though she acknowledges she did the damage unknowingly. The sitter came with many many 5* reviews so I know this was an error but the company does not appear to care to stand by their stated insurance backed guarantee. The insurance is a scam.
I think it’s a great service!
Actually renews my faith in humanity 🙂
Animals are pure love and it should be the main reason that you find interest in TrustedHouseSisters.com
Grateful that they offer such opportunities.
I recently searched Trusted House Sitters site hoping to find pet sitters for my 2 small dogs while I was away. It was over Christmas, 2018, they allowed me to view sitters location and availability, before joining. I was motivated to join thinking there are so many sitters available on the dates I needed near my home. I joined, messaged all the sitters, immediately with-in hours of joining, over 20,so far non are available. These sitters all say they are available on my dates needed on the site, they never updated their availability schedule. The site is allowing deception of sitters being available when they aren’t, take your money and run. The site wouldn’t refund my money said if you set up an account, use it by messaging sitters, you cant get a refund. To set up an account can take up to an hour or more, please don’t join this site horrible. I opened a dispute with Wells Fargo to get them to refund the membership fee back to my VISA. They are working on this for me, while I understand sitters are not always available when you message them on this site, but they are allowing the sitters to not updates there information thus taking new members money on the basis of false information displayed on their site. The other issue the potential new member is searching for sitters location and dates available, but they are all wrong, nothing updated and you join can’t get a sitter. I’ve messaged well over 20 sitters near my home, that said they are available on there schedule on the site, non are, replied back, this site is a scam, don’t join it.
We joined TrustedHouseSitters 18 months ago and have had 26 different sits so far, all in the south of England. It took a month or so to get the first one, after applying for quite a few unsuccessfully, but since then we have been successful in at least half of the places we applied for. I think the fact that we are a middle-aged couple helps a lot. There are probably wide regional variations and It is probably the case that once you get a couple of good reviews, you find it a lot easier to get the sit. By the way, we have not bothered with a police check and have only been asked for one a couple of times. We house-sit mainly because we both really love animals and I think that comes across to the owners. We are retired and that also helps because the owners know that we will be around to look after their house and pets rather than out working, or doing the sit as part of our vacation. We have done a couple of sits where the owner tells us that their previous sitters only seemed to be doing it for free accommodation while they explored the surrounding area and spent a minimal amount of time with their animals. I would suggest to anybody who has failed to find sits that they think about trying to find one that is very local, even in their home town before they look further afield. They can build up some experience and some excellent reviews, and it really helps to be local so that you can offer to meet personally with the owners before they decide.
I’ve just had my first experience with a housesitter. This sitter took excellent care of my pets, but I found my vehicle damaged when I returned. The sitter denied having damaged it and suggested it might have been hit while parked ( it doesn’t look consistent with that kind of damage). However, the point is that it was under his care while I was gone so shouldn’t he be responsible for repairs? Opinions, please.
hello
we have had the experience of having two excellent house sitters and who now i would consider friends.
However the most recent lady caused damage to my home in as much as set fire to the chimney and burned my walls which were newly decorated and broke a special vase. she left before we got home. she blames us for damage. she also asked no questions about our pets and frankly she didn’t seem to care. my concern is that she lapsed in her membership before doing out sit so i feel left cold as she is not part of the trusted housesitter contract and i cannot give feedback. it appears this women can come to our home wreck it and leave withlittle come back. any advice? a little sympathy from support but no feedback or advice.
had it not been for the wonderful experiences of previous housesitters we would have been totally lacking in faith but we realise its this awful women.
Total scam. They just relieved me of $100 and refused to refund it, even though I cancelled within the 14 day trial period. Customer service sucks. I got absolutely nothing of value from this crappy website.
its only for a certain type of person, especially for those who will work for FREE. and who needs to work for free. Free, you’ve got to be kidding, the management is laughing at all those who risk for free because they are getting their money from the poor laborers who are PAYING top dollar to work for free. go figure.
A female friend of mine encouraged me to join, as she has had some great sits, and is currently doing a 3 year long term sit in Canada. We were co-workers, and are now retired, both in our 60’s.
I live in Costa Rica, and there are usually sits available as people frequently travel to North America, needing someone to take care of their pets and house. I also go back to Canada in the summer, and would be able to do sits there.
But, after being a member for two years, I would never get any, and it finally dawned on me why – I’m a single male. It seems homeowners want, firstly, a married male/female couple, or secondly, a middle aged female. Reviewing previous sits from these homeowners indicated this was the case.
One homeowner, himself a single male, liked the fact I lived in the same country, and had my own vehicle. He did use me for a sit, and really appreciated how well his dog was cared for. I’ve now sat for him three times. But, I had already decided to not renew my membership this year, as no one, aside from one person, wanted my services. So for me, the high membership fee was not worth what I thought would be a nice way to spend time in my retirement years. The biases of homeowners is not something Trusted Housesitters can control, but if you are a single male, this ‘hobby’, based on my experiences, is not worth pursuing. Your mileage may vary. . .
